Key Milestones in Our Journey

Since our inception, we’ve dedicated ourselves to harnessing the power of oats for diverse applications. From the beginning, our focus has been to ensure that every ingredient reflects our Swedish values. Our journey showcases advancements in oat-based solutions that promote health and nutrition while remaining environmentally friendly.

50'S AND 60'S

It all began in the early 60’s when the World Health Organization held a global conference, stating that more animal protein would be needed in the world. In response, Astra Nutrition established a factory in Bua, south of Gothenburg in Sweden, starting to produce fish protein.

At the same time, a young farm boy named Åke Andersson grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, always fascinated by how healthy the farm animals were thanks to the oats they were feed. Oats were not only used to nourish livestock but were also consumed by humans on the farm and throughout Sweden, mostly as oatmeal.

“There must be other ways to use the oats to increase health for human beings even more”, he thought…

In 1963, the first known clinical study was conducted, showing that eating oats would lower blood cholesterol levels. This was a pivotal moment in the journey toward making oats a key component of human nutrition.

80'S AND 90'S

In the 80’s, demand for fish protein sharply declined, and to survive, the factory in Bua needed to pivot. Some of the original pioneers, along with Swedish agricultural cooperative Lantmännen, began exploring a new direction: defatting oat flakes to increase their content of soluble fiber, specifically beta-glucan.

By the late 80´s, the pioneers sought venture capital to establish a more solid foundation for the company and bring their oat-based products to the market. Åke Andersson was now fully involved, turning his childhood ideas about the health benefits of oats into a tangible reality.

In 1989, Swedish Oat Fiber was founded with the mission of developing production technologies and launching healthy oat-based ingredients for food industry.

The first product, oat bran, was introduced in 1992. By 1994, the last shipment of protein was made, and in 1995 Swedish Oat Fiber officially began its operations.

Throughout the 90´s, Swedish Oat Fiber focused on technology development, research, and networking. A significant portion of the company’s efforts was dedicated to regulatory work, ensuring that various health authorities would recognize the benefits of oats and approve health claims. A major breakthrough came in 1997, when the U.S. FDA approved a health claim related to the consumtions of oat beta-glucans.

00'S AND TODAY

In 2002, a subsidiary called CreaNutrition AG was founded in Switzerland. CreaNutrition’s mission was to market and sell Swedish Oat Fiber’s oat products and to work on securing global health claim approvals from regulatory authorities.

In 2004, a new product line was introduced: healthy oat oil. Demand for this product grew rapidly, with large quantities of crude oat oil being shipped to the UK and the USA for use in animal feed and pet supplements. Over the years, oat oil’s benefits for pets and animals with sensitive stomachs have gained widespread recognition, leading to increased deliveries to the cosmetic and food industries as well.

Eventually, CreaNutrition was phased out, and Swedish Oat Fiber took over direct selling and marketing. The company continued to work closely with key partners in various sectors, all operations being managed from the original site in Bua, where it all began.

In 2017, Swedish Oat Fiber was acquired by Naturex and became part of Givaudan in 2018. Givaudan is a global leader in the Taste & Wellbeing and Fragrance & Beauty industries. Today, Swedish Oat Fiber’s sales are handled by Givaudan’s dedicated teams worldwide.

With a strong foundation in place, Swedish Oat Fiber has become a world leader in supplying high-quality oat products, such as oat bran rich in oil and oat flours. The company continues to invest heavily in research, cementing its position as a leading expert in the benefits of oat beta-glucans and oat oil.

All of this success can be traced back to one young boy from a farm in Sweden who dreamed of improving human health through the power of oats.
